Southsea Gig Review

Review of "The Verals" gig @ Southsea on Saturday by Andy Trigg

Administrators

I watched The Verals last night at a seven act gig-fest organised by the inimitable Mat Hume from Fourth City. The Verals are described on their Facebook page as, "a teenage rock band from Sheffield". I would have preferred to not mention their ages, and just speak about them as a band like any other but they're not. They don't need patronising with words like - ooh aren't they great to say they are so young but it's impossible to put into context how good they are musically without pointing out their remarkably young ages (I've been told the drummer is 14 and the bassist and guitarist are 15 or 16).

I have to admit to being pretty blown away by how good The Verals are. Them being so young really adds to the pleasure of watching them, but if I have to think about how I'd rate them if they were 25 instead, I have to say I'd still rate them as one of Sheffield's best live bands so it begs the question - how good are they going to be in 5 years time?

Their music is rock based, heavy, loud, exciting, heavily riff driven and played with a skill and maturity which just shouldn't be developed yet unless they started 10 years back. The energy reminds me of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. I spoke to the drummer last night and he quoted Keith Moon as one of his inspirations, so that should give an idea of how much drum thrashing goes on. As with all the great 3 piece bands they have a great big sound, and each individual is very talented and dedicated. Anyway if you get chance to see them live it should be a very rewarding experience.

Cracking band, found their sound early and are well rounded in their playing. will deffo go on to something big in the future, if they continue to play the way they do.

Gig Revue The Verals – Royal Standard - 26/05/13

This was the night of the EP release and The Verals were playing to a lot of friends and family and with that in mind I think they felt more pressure than the usual gig in front of a room full of strangers.
From the start the atmosphere was electric and they started the set with a new song getting only its second public airing “Squirt” . This is a very in your face song and reminds me of the power pop/punk songs from the late 70s, I love it.
Next up was Stimulation a real thumping tune and crowd grabber by any standards. This was a little beset by feedback when the lead guitar was turned up. The guitar did need to come up a little as it is the main melody of all the songs but the feedback was a battle and plagued a few of the other songs.
None the less the band continued playing with a smile on their faces and the third song up with it’s haunting guitar riff was Chicks and Shades which is a song any band would be proud of. Flash of light was the fourth song up and this one for some reason reminds me of the Foos. It sets off nice and slow and then bang it’s a 100 mile per hour tune and the heads are banging again. Stop Lying was fifth on the set a sort of undertones teenage kicks opening riff before a lead break that kane really shouldn’t be able to play just yet !!
The middle of the set was the awesomely heavy Am I the only one which seriously reminds me of Sabbath at their peak and again I have to question how the hell they can write a song so good.
Song seven, Certain Place = wow wow wow. The Certain place this band are heading to is the very top of the tree. This song undoubtedly has one of the catchiest choruses you will have heard for a very long time and a thumping bass riff which leads into a heavier finish to a song which bands like Maiden and Metalica would be very proud of.
If it is possible to pick a favourite song then the next one up No Control is very high on my list Powerful with an awesome guitar sound and possibly better live than on the album.
All gone fishing is another new song and has a fantastic opening bombardment from guitar, bass and drums that you are instantly hooked on it to the very end.
See my Fire was tonight actually “on fire” I have to swear here and say this is fucking awesome and would grace any major bands set with pride. I absolutely love it.
Walkaway how can I explain this ? Better than Black Sabbath ? You think I’m kidding don’t you ? The vocals are clearly getting better with every gig played and this song was really done justice tonight.
The final song of the night is the business end where a band want to leave you with a lasting memory. What better way than to close your eyes and swear yourself blind that Hendrix is on the stage . If Hendrix had played this it would be one of the most duplicated songs around with every young guitarist brought up to try and play it. Shit hot lead riff at the end.
Time for one more it’s encore time and we get the charismatic You will never know which spent 8 weeks yes that’s right 8 weeks at number one the in unsigned band charts. Do I really need to add anymore to that ?
Was Confusion To Mind in the set ? If not why not ? Or was I so wrapped up in my little feedback issue that it went over my head.
If you have not yet seen this band and heavy music is your scene, then you need to catch them asap. Their age belies their ability, they could play as session musicians for anyone anywhere they are that good. Coupled with the fact they are in tune with each other, as tight as tight can be and quite simply write some of the best songs I have heard for years and you have a potent force destined for very high things.
They are already getting asked to play some very impressive gigs and are being asked to support bands that most bands can only hope for. It is a fantastic time to be at their gigs and at no cost financially. All that will change when they start gigging with the big boys and mark my words they will.
